The Sussex Food and Drink Awards are the only awards that highlight, recognise and support Sussex farmers and producers and the businesses which sell and promote their produce in the local market place.

A Taste of Sussex is sponsoring the BEST SUSSEX EATING EXPERIENCE. and this is what they are looking for:

The winner could be a restaurant, hotel, pub or café which uses and promotes mainly Sussex produce and offers consistently high quality food in an enjoyable atmosphere.

Judged it on its quality, taste and value for money. Consider the ambience and service of the eating experience.

• What makes you go there time after time?
• How well does the venue use seasonal products or ingredients?
• Does it serve county wines or beverages?
• Are local cheeses available?
• What was the presentation of the meal like and what was its flavour like?
• How well was it cooked?
• Was the menu interesting?
• Are families welcome and how is this demonstrated?
• Are local suppliers’ names mentioned on the menu?
• Also consider quality and speed of service, the knowledge of the staff and the overall atmosphere.

More about Mid Summers Day, courtesy of Mysterious England: The festival is primarily a Celtic fire festival, representing the middle of summer, and the shortening of the days on their gradual march to winter. Midsummer is traditionally celebrated on either the 23rd or 24th of June, although the longest day actually falls on the 21st of June. The importance of the day to our ancestors can be traced back many thousands of years, and many stone circles and other ancient monuments are aligned to the sunrise on Midsummer’s Day. Probably the most famous alignment is that at Stonehenge, where the sun rises over the heel stone, framed by the giant trilithons on Midsummer morning.

We found out that you want to enjoy the fresh, homecooked country food, but sometimes you don’t have time to spend the whole evening relaxing – you need to get on with work or you want to stay in and catch the latest episode of EastEnders. Farm Shop at The Countryman West Sussex

Due to popular demand, we have started planning to start work on the Countryman Farm Shop. The Countryman Farm Shop will consist of a new area dedicated to showcasing produce from local suppliers. As well as our own homegrown produce there will be fresh vegetables from keen local gardeners, homemade chutneys and preserves, local cheese and cold meat selection, homemade bread and cakes, and fresh milk, cream and eggs from various farms.

Many of the vegetables that you will see are from the same suppliers that we use for our freshly cooked food at The Countryman – the best country pub in West Sussex.

A few interesting facts about Farmers Markets

The first farmers’ market started 13 years ago in 1997 and there are now over 500! This proves the greedy supermarkets haven’t completely won! On the contrary –  these statistics prove that the public want fresh, high quality food and they want to support local farmers and suppliers. Farmers markets are usually held on a weekly or monthly basis – the emphasis being on quality and freshness. When you talk to the stallholder, you will normally find that you are talking to the actual farmer that grew the produce for sale!  Source: Alliance & Leicester Commercial Banking news.

Our Farm Shop will be open every day!

Once our farm shop is open, you will not have to wait a whole month to buy your fresh food, as our shop will be open every day during The Countryman pub opening hours. We will update you on the progress of the our new farm shop regularly.

Horsham District Food and Drink Festival

It’s not long now until the Horsham District Food and Drink Festival 2009. It starts on 
5th September and runs until 4th October 2009.

You can take part in The Big Nibble in Horsham Carfax as well as stacks of other events. Pick up a programme of events from us here at The Countryman in Shipley.
